It was constructed to shorted the trip from Baltimore to northeast and European ports by 300 miles. The canal has been periodically improved since construction and currently is 35 feet deep and 450 feet wide to allow two-way passage of ocean-going vessels. Also associated with the canal are five highway bridges and one railroad bridge.
