Notes
The canal was constructed between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania between 1826 and 1834. The canal averaged 40 feet in width and four feet deep. The most notable feature of the route was the Allegheny Portage Railroad built in the 1830s to carry cargo 36 miles between canal segments at Hollidaysburgh and Johnstown. The railroad also featured the first railway tunnel in the United States.
